The "El-Cheapo" .00 flea-market Stereoview No. 676 shown above started out as an original, high-quality photographic view taken by T. ENAMI of Yokohama, Japan — as many as 10 years before being printed in the USA as you see it here.

The "Green Mount" version seen above was published by SEARS, ROEBUCK & CO between 1906-1910. (The "White Mount" versions were made only in 1905, and contained no descriptions on the back). Before Sears got their hands on it, it had already gone through many real-photo reprints by T.W. INGERSOLL, a large Mid-Western America stereoview publisher.

Sears simply converted a real-photo version into a lithograph. The photograph was carefully retouched to brighten the faces, and their art department colored away (using hand applied tints) to their heart’s desire — according to every whim of their imagination.

And yet…it still remains an important "Diamond in the Rough" for photo-collectors, archivists, curators, and others concerned with the history of Old Japanese Photographers.

However, some budding curators don’t know that yet, and some who SHOULD "know better" usually end up tossing stereoviews like this to the side in favor of unknown silver prints that tell them nothing. (Nothing wrong with that, though, if it’s a good-looking silver print!)

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE CONTENTS OF # 676

This is one of many old similar litho-views where Enami’s various studio and background props may be seen. It is also a good photographic proof of Enami’s commercial output during the 1890s. The view shows one of Enami’s large souvenir albums opened to his studio view of a Geisha in a ‘rickshaw posed with her runner. A few un-mounted album prints are seen on the floor, and many of his early buff-mount stereoviews are scattered about. The youngsters are enjoying the album and the stereoviews, while one colors photographs.

The particular backdrop he used here is one of a few that appear in formerly un-identified albumens TIPPED into important works such as BRINKLEY’S 1897 "JAPAN: DESCRIBED AND ILLUSTRATED BY THE JAPANESE". Much of the work needed to identify Enami’s images throughout major collections involves building a reference library of photographs that carry his imprint or credit line — or series of his images such as these that have been confirmed in other ways.

Although there are many good sources for T. ENAMI guide-images, the formerly unaccredited—but now solidly identified—100-view set of color-litho JAPAN views published by Sears, Roebuck & Co. of Chicago is one of the best, and contains the above view as part of its position number 601-700 JAPAN series.

Multiply the ID value of the above view by 100, and you have an idea why this humble set of “cheap lithos” should be obtained — especially if you are in the business of curating old Japanese photographs.

By the way, I just saw a nice first-edition set of these sell for -something on eBay. They usually go for -0…and sometimes as much as 0 with a "Buy it Now" button. Over all, a cheap price to pay for a Meiji-era Litho-view guide set to 100 examples of very old and early T. ENAMI images — images that you might later recognize and acquire as real-photo silver prints, or as delicately hand-tinted lantern-slides (from half-stereoview negatives) made in the master’s studio.

La Social Media Week, il festival della rete è veramente un evento straordinario: dal 20 al 24 Settembre Bogotà, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Mexico City e Milano si connettono proponendo cinque giorni di eventi creati per la maggior parte dal basso, da persone e da aziende che hanno qualcosa da dire sul tema Social Media.
